Magazine Pouch Retention Adjustment Using the MRD: Step-by-Step Guide

Proper magazine retention can make or break your reloads on the range or in a defensive scenario. In this guide, we walk through how to adjust your Magazine Retention Device (MRD) on Four Brothers magazine carriers quickly and reliably using a simple 1/8" Allen wrench. Follow these steps to get consistent, secure retention that matches your preference and carry style.

What Is the MRD and Why It Matters

The MRD (Magazine Retention Device) is a built-in mechanism in our magazine carriers that lets you fine-tune how tightly your mags are held. It ensures a secure fit without sacrificing quick accessibility — essential for EDC reliability and competitive reloads.

Tools You’ll Need

  • 1/8" Allen wrench (included with most MRD-equipped carriers)
  • Your magazine carrier with MRD
  • One magazine for test fitting

Step-by-Step MRD Retention Adjustment

1. Position Your Carrier

Lay your magazine carrier flat on a stable surface, or hold it in your hand, to easily access the MRD adjustment screw.

2. Insert the Allen Wrench

Place the 1/8" Allen wrench into the silver adjustment screw on the MRD. This is located on the side of the carrier near the magazine opening.

3. Increase or Decrease Retention

  • Turn clockwise: Increases tension for a tighter, more secure hold.
  • Turn counter-clockwise: Loosens tension for easier draws.

4. Test with Your Magazine

Insert your magazine and give it a few tug tests. If it comes out too easily, tighten a notch or two. If it’s too tight, back off slightly. Remember to test the carrier with the magazine oriented the way you intend to carry it. (Bullets forward or bullets back)

5. Fine-Tune to Your Preference

Different magazines (double vs. single stack) and user preferences require slight tweaks. Adjust until you find a balance between secure retention and smooth presentation.

Retention Adjustment Tips

  • Always test retention with a magazine — not just empty hands.
  • Small adjustments go a long way — only quarter-turn increments.
  • When in doubt, start slightly looser and tighten as needed.

Common Questions

How tight should magazine retention be?
Secure enough that it won’t fall out during movement, but loose enough to draw without hesitation.

Does the MRD work with all magazine brands?
Yes — the MRD’s adjustable design accommodates a wide range of magazine brands—fine-tune per mag.
